How To Lose Weight Safely

With a society focused on celebrities and models, it can be easy to get discouraged with our own self-image. Not to mention there is a multitude of self help books promoting new diet fads, commercials advertising new weight loss supplements, and dangerous new procedures to help you lose weight. However, what is the best way to lose weight safely and keep it off?

Most doctors have stated that it is safe to lose up to three pounds per week at home by utilizing a healthy diet and exercise. This would eliminate those crazy diets in which you lose upwards of ten pounds in one week.

Losing weight is really quite simply a game of numbers. One pound is the equivalent of 3,500 calories- a normal individual burns roughly 2,000 calories a day in daily activities and bodily needs. So if you eat less calories than your body uses, you lose weight. If you eat more calories than you body uses, you gain weight.

In theory, if you burn through exercise 500 more calories than what you are eating, after one week you could expect to lose up to 2 pounds. If you wanted to lose weight a little quicker, you would just have to burn extra calories, or reduce the caloric intake through food. Don’t be fooled- some diets have you restrict your salt and starch intake for fast weight loss, but be aware this is mostly water weight and it will return.

When planning your diet, it is very important to continue eating balanced meals. Focus on eating mostly fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fishes, egg whites, and nonfat dairy foods. Generally, try to minimize starches, additional sugars, and animal fats.

Here are some helpful hints: Try to eat a lot of vegetables- these will help to fill you up so you aren’t tempted to fill up on junk food. Drink a lot of water, especially before meals. Do not keep  tempting foods in your house! Try to keep yourself occupied-if you get bored you will want to eat.

Stop the bad habits of eating on the couch in front of the television. This just encourages boredom eating. Only eat from a plate when you are sitting at the kitchen table. Most importantly, do not try to cut calories by skipping meals- this only adds to weight gain by making your body feel as if it is in starvation mode.

If you continue to have a problem with weight loss, consider keeping a food diary and an exercise log to identify potential causes for failure. Remember, losing weight is a healthy lifestyle change! Don’t get discouraged if you do not see results right away!

In conclusion, even though there are many diet options out there, the most tried and tested methods are the best. Stick to a good exercise routine and try to eat a healthy, balanced diet. This will have good results and you will feel better about yourself and your future as well.

How I Won the Battle over My Depression

I am one of those individuals that took heavy anti-depression medications for years, with little to no results. For me, my depression has been a debilitating condition that caused me to do nothing, and experience virtually no life at all. After spending years of following the doctor’s advice, I finally took the problem into my own hands, and change my life for the better. This is how I have won my battle over my depression.

For well over a decade, I suffered with ongoing depression. There were times when it was worse than others, but it was always there. I felt the sensation inside me of total emptiness, and being all alone. The helplessness I felt was intense, and it appeared as though nothing I would ever do could ever make myself feel better again.

It began when I was a child, and my parents took me to the doctor to find out what was wrong. The doctor said I had clinical depression, and immediately put me on anti-depression medications. The outcome was not good. I felt more depressed than ever before, and desperately wanted to stop taking the medication altogether.

I began researching online of alternative methods of curing depression and found that I could take positive steps to alter my behavior and how my body responded to the environment, and the foods I consumed. Living at home with family, it was challenging to change my diet, but I started becoming extremely picky on whatever I put in my mouth.

I started exercising every day without fail. I first began walking just a couple of miles, and found it to be quite challenging. Over time I was walking 6 miles a day, and was losing a lot of weight. I was soon light enough that I could start jogging, without damaging my joints. Becoming slimmer, I was feeling better about myself and certainly less depressed.

Because I was thinner, feeling better and certainly had more energy, I was attracting more people to my social circle. I was gathering new friends that wanted to hang out around me because I was happy all the time. I recognized that it had been a long time since I was feeling depressed, and would only slip back into that sensation when someone would say some offhanded remark, or try to make me feel bad about myself.

I recognize that their ill words, directed as a knife to my heart, were simply their own reaction of their low self-esteem. I created a shield around myself that protected me from the further impact of their harsh words and ill feelings. In time, I was able to completely circumvent the outside forces and my inner feelings that had caused me to produce my own levels of depression.

I am now in a state of mind where my depression no longer exists. There are still times that I feel bad, but I do not feel depressed. I realize that I have control over my actions and feelings, and certainly the thoughts that I produce in my head. My battle with my depression is finally over and I am living a happier and healthier life.

How I Was Able to Lose Weight After My Baby Was Born

After my second baby was born, I worked really hard to lose all of the weight I had gained. I tried a few things and was able to see results. I was so happy that I was able to lose the weight.

The first thing that I did was I quit driving when I didn’t need to. I walked everywhere. I had a double stroller that I could put my two young kids in. I walked to the grocery store, to my friend’s house and even to the doctor’s office.

I was walking between 2-3 hours a day. I started to see results pretty quickly. It was hard to get started but once I got into the routine of walking, it came easily to me. It got to the point that I would go weeks without driving my car.

In addition to walking I also decided to give up soda. I had heard that soda is a big reason people can’t lose any weight. I think it really worked for me because I saw an even bigger difference when I gave up drinking it.

The number on the scale was going down quickly but in addition to losing weight I also wanted to become a healthier person. Since I had two little kids I wanted to teach them about how to eat healthy. I started replacing a few different foods that I normally liked to eat.

For breakfast I replaced my typical meal of cereal and a muffin. I felt like that was too many carbs at once. I started making a smoothie every morning. I usually put in strawberries, bananas and yogurt. I also sometimes added a protein mix.

For lunch I tried to avoid fast food. If I had to get fast food I would order a salad. It was hard at first but once I stopped eating it, I really didn’t want it anymore. I knew how much healthier I was eating.

For dinner I would have a normal meal but I would put less carbs and more vegetables on my plate. This wasn’t hard because I do like a lot of different types of vegetables. I would also make my children little plates of what I was eating.

After about six months I looked like a different person. I had lost about 20lbs and was a couple of sizes smaller. I was so proud of myself. I rewarded myself with a trip to the mall to buy some new clothes.

Losing all of that weight wasn’t easy but I am glad I was able to do it. I am now at my goal weight and intend to stay there for the rest of my life. I do not want to be overweight ever again.

If I have a friend who wants to lose weight, I just tell them to go for it. I tell them that it is worth it. That once they do it they will feel so good about themselves that they will know what a good decision it was.

Hidden Dangers Of Rapid Weight Loss

Weight loss is a big issue for an important part of the American population. Even from young age we are subject to temptations such a fast food, sweets and carbonated soft drinks, which are poor in nutrients but rich in sugar, preservatives and empty calories. Once an individual passes a certain weight limit, controlling it becomes practically impossible. This is where the diet struggle begins.

Experience shows that many overweight people want to shed their pounds as fast as possible. The most determined ones will starve themselves, hoping they will regain the looks they once had. Those persons ignore the fact that by starvation, the body is deprived of those nutrients that are needed to support life. This is how they can develop severe anemia or other nutritional illnesses. When this happens, they resort to doctors who put them back on real food. Soon, they return to their unhealthy eating habits and the pounds return, many times even in bigger numbers.

What is it considered rapid weight loss? Traditional diets state that everything that’s more than 2 pounds a week is considered rapid. The calculation is based on the conversion of pounds into calories. If a weight loss program assumes a calorie deficit bigger than 1000 calories per day, it will be very hard to compensate with exercise, therefore the person won’t be able to secure the minimum amount of nutrients the body needs.

It’s funny what people would do to lose a few pounds as fast as a couple of days. They have short term objectives. For instance, a girl might want to lose a three-four pounds from Monday to Sunday, because she’s going to a date or a party and she wants to fit inside a certain dress she loves. For that matter, she’d starve herself for five days, without considering she might harm her stomach or even trouble her metabolism. If she doesn’t make sure she drinks enough water, she might also experience dehydration. This is a big price to pay for simply fitting into a dress.

A long term low protein diet will cause malnutrition. It will also lead to diminishing the muscular mass, because the body will consume its own protein when it doesn’t find it in the food. Protein is found in muscles. When you lose weight, you want to get rid of the fat, but keep your muscular mass intact. This is why you need a minimum protein intake no matter what diet you choose.

Experience shows that rapid weight loss significantly increases the risk of developing gallstones. This risk occurs whether or not the weight loss is intentional. If it is unintentional, a visit to a physician is recommended as soon as you notice it, even if you were overweight, so losing weight without doing anything for it seems awesome.

There might be situations when rapid weight loss is actually needed and recommended by a doctor. Weight loss surgery, for instance, may require the patient to lose a significant amount of weight in order to become eligible. However, such cases will always be closely monitored by doctors, so the risk of developing secondary conditions is minimized.

If you were just thinking to start some rapid weight loss diet, consider talking to your doctor first. Your body will thank you.

Helping Your Teen to Lose Weight

You probably remember what it was like to be a teenager. You probably felt awkward, embarrassed and weren’t sure how to feel about your developing body, especially if you were a girl. That is why it is important for you today, as a parent, to do what you can in order to help your daughter if she wants to lose weight. Here are some ideas you can use to make sure that you help her lose weight while remaining supportive.

The first thing you want to do is to make sure that she knows that weight loss isn’t your idea. It can be very damaging to a teenager for her parent to feel that she is “fat”. You have to make sure that she views you as a supportive person in her life, not as a taskmaster or someone who finds her unattractive. Make sure she knows that you love her at any size, and that you are there to help.

You definitely want to have a talk with your family doctor, to rule out any health conditions which could cause extra weight. This is also a good time to ask about calorie requirements and whether any supplements are acceptable, in case your daughter wants to use some.

Next, you have to help her get her diet under control. If one person in your home is trying to lose weight, it is only considerate to make sure that you and everyone else try to eat as healthy as possible as well. Losing weight does not mean that you have no appetite, just that the food you eat is nutritious and nourishing. Therefore, try to cook in a more healthy way as much as possible.

This is also a good time to mention that you need to make sure that she does not develop an eating disorder. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are very dangerous disease that millions of girls succumb to every year. Don’t let your daughter be one of them. Keep your eyes on her actions as much as you are able to. Impress upon her that she needs food to function in her life.

After you help with her diet, you need to get her exercising. Most teenagers don’t like exercise unless they’re athletes. The only time they run they are in gym class. Therefore, it’s important that you talk with her about what physical activities she enjoys. She may want to try rock climbing, or she might like dancing. Physical activity is something that will help her whittle away the pounds.

Help her to set goals, and reward her for them. This can be a fun thing that just the two of her do. Let her dictate her own goals, within reason. And then, be her cheerleader, ready to celebrate when she meets her goals. Remember, don’t reward with food.

Weight loss is a journey, so soothe her when she feels disappointed. Use the advice in this article to make sure that your daughter loses weight in a safe way that leaves her very happy.

How To Get Fit With Bad Knees

Swimming is the best exercise you can do if you have bad knees. It puts no stress on your knees and tones your entire body. Being in the water is enjoyable, and you will definitely stay fit and burn calories if you swim three or four times a week. You don’t need to swim for a long time either. 20 minutes is enough to get the cardiovascular benefits. The kicking motion of your legs will strengthen the muscles that support your knees.

Try focusing your workouts on your upper body. Rowing machines are easy on your knees, and the bending motion will tighten your leg muscles. It’s a good all over toner that works wonders on your arms. The upper body ergometer is a common piece of equipment at gyms that gives your upper body a good workout. Instead of using your legs to pedal, you use your arms to pedal.

Bicycling is also a low impact exercise that strengthens your knees. Use a stationary bike or get out in the sunshine and ride outside. Stationary bikes put less stress on your knees, so you might want to start with those. Riding a bike strengthens your knees and is great for your cardiovascular system. The elliptical trainer has the same effect and works well for people with bad knees.

Along with cardio exercises, you need to incorporate stretching exercises that strengthen the muscles surrounding your knees. The muscles that support your knees are on the front of your thighs, back of your thighs, inside your thighs and outside your thighs. Strengthening these muscles ensures your knees are strong and resistant to injury. Stretching these muscles will keep your joints from stiffening too.

The first stretch to try is a heel slide. Get on your back bending your right knee with your right foot flat on the floor. Slowly slide your left heel towards the floor. Hold for 5 seconds and return to the starting position. Repeat 5 to 10 times on each leg.

Next try a hamstring stretch. Stand up and put one foot in front of you with your toes facing up. Hold on to a chair if you need support. Bend your opposite knee and hip until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings. Your upper body will move at your hip. Hold for 10 seconds and release. Repeat 5 to 10 times on each leg.

Bad knees don’t have to hold you back from starting or sticking with a fitness routine. Keep your knees strong with these exercises and stretches and you can lose weight and get fit. These exercises are easy to do and give your knees the workout they need.

How to Maintain Your Fitness While on Vacation

As the summer season approaches, many of us are finding ourselves getting ready to gear up to celebrate a well-deserved summer vacation. Many times we approach the vacation with reckless abandon, giving up on our traditional diet routines and exercise workouts.

Vacation time is often considered to be the best way to relax, and rejuvenate before needing to head back to the office. But exactly how can an individual maintain their fitness while on vacation?

Vacationing in Moderation

Who does not enjoy a quality vacation? Vacationing is the ideal way to kick back, and spent a relaxing time with family and friends. It is very easy to eat tons of barbecues, and enjoy drinks without the need of wondering what will happen to our bodies when we get back home. However, it is important to take vacationing in stride, and do everything in moderation, especially eating.

It is important to avoid any type of over eating, or consuming foods that are of poor nutritional value. Typically, it is easy to understand why we become so lethargic while on a vacation or trip. The same type of principle needs to be fully applied on the amount of alcohol consumed. While you have certainly earned the right to enjoy adult beverages while on vacation, getting loaded every night will not only hurt your waistline, but your liver.

Staying Active

Most people look at vacation time is a time to veg out, and not consider exercise. However, taking an entire week off from daily routines, especially those involving high activity, can cause significant issues to your health. Even if there is no gym in sight, you can still produce a meaningful workout, by hiking the beach, going kayaking, and taking long walks to enjoy the great outdoors. Imagine substituting a daily session on the treadmill by incorporating other activities that produce the same results

Consider taking the entire family along to exercise, to enjoy the vacation in the outdoor environment. While it does not have to happen every day, staying active is an important part of maintaining routine, even while on vacation. By being more active, you will maintain your fitness and be able to get back to the routine, once you arrive back home.

Use the Surroundings

It does not matter of your vacationing on the beaches of Hawaii, or getting lost on the Las Vegas strip. There is activity around every vacation spot that might include learning how to surf, taking to the golf course, or finding an exercise class at a local gym.

While all of these activities work well in the summertime, what about taking your vacation in winter. There are just as many things to do during the wintertime, as in the summer. Consider making a small gymnasium on the inside of your hotel room, and perform calisthenics, push-ups and other exercise routines.

No matter where you vacation, stay away from high cuisine every night of the week. Minimize the amount of food you consume, and increase the level of exercise, and you will fit better into your clothing, while getting back to your normal routine once the vacation has ended.
